Volunteer Activities

Volunteer activities are quite common in Japan today. In addition to volunteers who help clean up rivers and mountains, or who go to provide assistance to affected areas of major earthquakes and other disasters, many volunteers work on projects overseas. The efforts of the estimated 1.4 million volunteers who helped at the time of the deadly 1995 Kobe Earthquake are thought to have been decisive. From that year onward, volunteer activity has been consistently on the increase, with many people contributing their time in many ways to help others on a daily basis.
