Doll’s Day (Hinamatsuri)

March 3rd is “Dolls’ Day,” a day for celebrating the healthy growth of girls. It is also called the “Peach Festival” as it comes at the season when the peach blossoms are in bloom. In households with girls, traditional Hinamatsuri dolls are put on display and a festive meal is served with dishes such as colorful chirashi-zushi (“scattered sushi”) and clear soup containing hamaguri clams. Hina-arare, rice crackers or sweets made in different colors, are also enjoyed as part of the celebrations.
