The Star Festival (Tanabata)

July 7th is Tanabata, the Star Festival [when it is traditionally thought that on a clear night when the Milky Way is visible, prayers will be answered and the legendary “Weaving Girl” will meet her lover the “Cowherd”]. Schools, shopping malls, and households put up a branch of bamboo and people hang poem cards (tanzaku) and origami from the branches with prayers they hope will be answered by heaven on this night.
