#1_1,#1_2, #1_3, #1_4, #1_5, #1_6, #1_7
TJF lesson plan "Journey to Visit the Seven Deai Students"
A map of Japan

Divide the class into seven groups. A representative from each group selects one of seven envelopes. These envelopes should each contain a different version of the worksheet "An E-mail Letter from Your Host Family" with appended photos of the appropriate Deai student's family. Explain to the students that the envelopes contain an e-mail letter from the host family they will stay with when they visit Japan the following summer.

Appended photos:
MY-P05, MY-P11
OK-P07
SM-P08
TS-P03, TS-P07
YK-P03, YK-P05
YT-P09, YT-D06
YY-P07

Each group reads the letter it received. Once the students in each group have understood the content of their letter, pass out the respective photo sheets listed below for supplementary information. (* Photo sheets containing the photos appended to the original letter; ** Photo sheets of the town(s) where the Deai student lives)

MY-P01, MY-P05*, MY-P11*
OK-P01, OK-P07*, OK-P12**
SM-P01, SM-P08*, SM-P11**, SM-P12**
TS-P01, TS-P03*, TS-P07*, TS-P13**, TS-P14**
YK-P01, YK-P03*, YK-P05*, YK-P09**
YT-P01, YT-P09*, YT-D06*, YT-P15**, YT-P16**
YY-P01, YY-P07*, YY-P12**

Have students use sticky notes to label the names of their host Deai student's family members, town, etc. on the photo sheets. Instruct them to mark the location of each town on a large classroom map of Japan. Using the photo sheets and map, each group introduces the town and host family it will be visiting.

In connection with the TJF lesson plan "Journey to Visit the Seven Deai Students," have the students plan a trip to visit their host Deai student's family.

Students write a reply by e-mail to the letter from their Deai student. In responding to the invitation, students should express their gratitude to their host family and assure the Deai student that they can get to ____ train station on their own, that they will meet him or her at ___ time on ___ day of ___ month, and that they will be sure to call the Deai student's cell phone if they get lost. Students also might want to express their anticipation, describe their likes and dislikes, what they want to do during their stay, and anything they might be worried about.

[Note from TJF: Please send us the letters that your students write! TJF will publish the letters we receive on the Idea Corner of the Deai Website.]
