Students choose a town they wish to investigate from among those where the seven Deai students live, referring to the worksheet completed in Activity 1. Students go to the library and research the geography, history, etc. in reference works and via the Internet. Students create a list of things that relate to their own town (state/province, country). (This may be done in English.)

Students who chose the same town form groups of three or four. They share and discuss each other’s lists, compile a list of their points, entitled "Connections between (name of students’ town) and (name of Deai student’s town)," and write them on a large sheet of paper (poster paper) for display.

Tip:
Encourage students to consider the populations, major industries, geography and climate of the two towns. Also suggest sister city exchanges, industrial, historical, and other connections.

Each group displays its poster and presents its findings to the class.

The teacher selects some key words and key sentences from the content of each group’s list or presentation to express in Japanese. (Present the key words and sentences in such a way as to link them to the sentence structures and vocabulary the students have studied, and to content that has come to have special meaning for them.) Students may work on the exercise as individuals or in groups.

Examples of key words and key sentences:
人口が同じくらいです。
あついです。
雪がよくふります。
姉妹都市です。

Students present the key words and sentences they have come up with in Japanese to the whole class. Record them on an OHP sheet or on the blackboard for the whole class to see.

Students choose several key words or sentences they like, and as homework, they write a paragraph that uses them. This may be used for portfolio evaluations.
