Recalling what was done in Activity 3, the teacher should pose questions like the following to the students.

Let us say we go to Japan and stay with family.
We will stay in the home of one of the seven Deai students.
Whose family would you like to stay with?
Why?

Group together the students who pick a home-stay with the same family. Have each group discuss, if they went to stay with that family: What kind of conversations they would have with the family (e.g., topics they would talk about, souvenirs they would take to give them, etc.), what kinds of problems they might encounter, how they would resolve those problems, etc. (If necessary, refer to the photographs, photo captions, and the “My Family” section of “My Story.”

Tip:
Possible problems would be caused by the differences in etiquettes, customs and ways of doing things in each family. Students may examine customs of the family they chose and compare them with their own family customs. E.g., helping with a meal, doing dishes, talking during a meal, watching TV.

What kinds of things will you talk about with the host family?
What gifts or souvenirs will you take to them?
Will you take photographs of your family?
What kinds of activities would you like to do together?
What kinds of problems do you think you would have?
How do you think you would solve the problems?

Have students present to the class, group by group, the things they discussed in “2.” above. (English may also be used, depending on the level of the students.)

For advanced students, distribute the model conversation shown on Note 4. Have them read the conversation and discuss ways to carry on a good conversation with their host family.

For advanced students, based on the material discussed in “2.,” “3.,” and “4.” above, have each group choose one incident, activity or conversational topic, create a skit showing how they would communicate with their home-stay family and present it to the class. Have members of the class exchange comments after the presentation of each group’s skit.
