Ideas for Projects
(1) Have the students read the bilingual caption of YT-P06 and search for Japanese words or phrases corresponding to "dress cool," "darkish," "sober," "baggy," etc. Letting the students discuss their favorite fashion or colors to wear, the teacher should provide the words or phrases that the students need to describe fashion. After discussing their preferences with each other, the students put them in writing.

私は/も あかるい/あざやかな/くらい/しぶい いろがすきです。
たとえば(色の名前)がすきです。
だぼっとしたファッションは好きです/あまりすきじゃありません。

(2) Have the students pick out the clothes they like from the Deai photos and comment on them in writing. In their comments, students should describe the outfit of the person and add why they like it.

わたしはこれがいいとおもいます。 さんはAdj.い をきています/Adj.な をはいています。かっこいいです。

(3) Have the students assess the degree of coolness of the Deai students' clothes and fashion sense. Let them guess to what degree each Deai student is fashion-conscious. Ask the students to support their guesses using the Deai photos [See Worksheet #1_1 - #1_7].

(4) Let the students discuss their favorite fashion using picture clippings from fashion, sports, and movie magazines. Provide them with some words or phrases to describe their favorite fashion when needed.

かっこいい/はでな/じみな/(有名なタレント)のような
Compile a fashion scrapbook. Each student prepares a page using clippings from her/his fashion idol, such as a football player, actor or actress, singer, etc. Have the students write a caption for each clipping. The clippings can also be compiled into a collage poster.

(5) Using the photos of 茶髪/ルーズソックス from Deai, let the students express their opinion about these styles. Have the students talk about fads among the young people in their own culture.

かっこいいと思います。かっこいいとは思いません。(理由)からです。
今、カナダでは、 がはやっています。
For 茶髪, the following article might help trigger a good discussion:

For ルーズソックス, check the websites below.

(6) Let students observe and discuss a current fashion trend in Japan, comparing it to their own culture. You can observe the latest fashion to hit the street in Japan at the following site.

http://www.shibuden.meguro.tokyo.jp/

(7) Viewing the photos related to the Japanese Students' fashion from the TJF Photo Contest, students can learn about what Japanese students wear, how they groom themselves, what sort of outfits they like or dislike, and what sort of thoughts or consciousness they have about their appearance. Have the students compare their own ways to those of the Japanese. Encourage the students to send their comments or their photos to the website.

(8) If the class has some students with ethnic backgrounds that include the concept of a national costume, ask them to introduce their costumes to the class. Examples from other cultures will broaden the students' horizons in terms of cultural diversity.
