Date: Country: Author(copyright): Themes:
2001/10 Japan The Japan Forum Self, Family, and Friends
Overview:
Students review, in Japanese, their own relationships with people around themselves. Students consider how these people influence them. Use the diagram from Activity 1 as a prompt.

Worksheets and other materials:
Worksheet #1 and #2 completed in Activity 1
Worksheet #3
Worksheet #4

Students use Worksheets #2 (“Shun’ichi to mawari no hitobito”) and #1 (“Shun’ichi to mawari no hitobito no kankei”) as guides to diagram the human relationships in their own lives on Worksheet #3 (“Jibun to mawari no hitobito”).

Ask the students to choose one person in their own human relations diagram whom they think has influenced them significantly. Write about that person on Worksheet #4 (“Eikyo o uketa hito”). Students write key words in Japanese that describe that person. (e.g., soccer coach, strict, enthusiastic, first prize/district title). Give students time to think about the person they have chosen. Encourage them to think about how this person has influenced them. Ask the students to describe the person to the class using the words they listed. Ask questions to prompt descriptions about the influence the person has had. For example, What does she do or say to you when you play soccer? How does she help you and your team? Then students write simple sentences about the relationship with the person on Q2 (2) on the worksheet.

Students write an essay about this person using information from Worksheet #4. (May be done in English.)
