Overview:
Students observe and understand the composition of the family of Sakai Michi and know the names, ages, hobbies, and character of each family member, and learn to express them in Japanese. Students observe her host family in Hokkaido, and become aware of the influence of family on the individual.
(Option: Students draw a diagram of their own family and compare it to Michi’s family.)

While showing the students photograph SM-P08, the teacher asks various questions about Michi’s family.

これは、だれの家族ですか。 Whose family is this?
何人家族ですか。 How many members are there in her family?
だれがいますか。 Who are the people in the photograph?
お父さんはどこにいますか(どれですか)。 Where is Michi’s father (which one is her father)?
どんな人ですか。 What kind of person is he?
(せがたかいですか、ひくいですか、etc.) (e.g., tall, short, etc.)
お母さんはどこにいますか。
(*妹とまちがえやすいので、あえて聞く。)
Which one is her mother?
(* It is easy to mistake Michi’s sister for her mother.)
どんな人ですか。 What kind of person do you think she is?
(おじいさんとおばあさんを指して)
これはだれですか。
何才ぐらいでしょう。
(Pointing to Michi’s grandfather and grandmother)

Tip:

Distribute Worksheet #1 (Michi-san to Kazoku / Michi and Her Family) and direct as follows:

これから、みちさんの家族の構成図(family tree)を書きましょう。
私が家族の紹介を日本語でします。
Now we are going to draw the Michi’s family tree.
I will introduce the family members in Japanese.
みなさんは、聞いて、ワークシートに書いてください。 Please listen to what I say and write in names, ages, hobbies, etc., on the worksheet.

Referring to Note1, the teacher provides information about Michi’s family in Japanese.
* When dealing with Japanese learners at the intermediate or advanced level, distribute copies of the Japanese captions for photographs SM-P08 and SM-P09 and use these for Reading/Comprehension tasks.

Pose Question 2 and Question 3 from Worksheet #1 and have the class engage in discussion.

Show students photograph SM-P04, and while asking questions, introduce Michi’s weekend homestay family. (The teacher should refer to Note 2.)

この人たちはだれでしょう。 Who are these people?
未知さんのお父さんですか。 Is this Michi’s father?
何をしていますか。 What are they doing?

Based on the information presented in “4.” above, have the students complete Worksheet Q4-7.

Variation:
If the students are willing, have them draw their own family tree and note similarities and differences (e.g., regarding number of family members, composition of family, age, and personality).
