Have the students work in groups to design the ideal school uniform and hold a contest.

If pen/key-pals are available, have the students conduct a questionnaire survey on what Japanese students think about school uniforms. (The caption of MY-D04 would be a good introduction to this project.)

Divide the class into two groups, and have the students debate for and against school uniforms.

Pass out all the Deai photos to the students and let them pick out any outfits that interest them. The students can contrast clothes from different scenes, such as club activities, field trips/excursions, ceremonial events or family photos.

Compare the clothes of teachers and parents in Deai, to those in the students' own culture.

Study the seasonal changes of school uniforms.

(1) Pick up one of the photos of a Deai student wearing his/her school uniform and ask the students if the Deai student wears the same uniform throughout the year.

Let the students point out that there must be different uniforms for different seasons.

(2) Categorize the uniforms in Deai for winter and summer.

(3) Reading the caption of YK-D04, students check their understanding. The teacher lets the students guess what sort of clothing つめえり is. Showing つめえり in YK-P08 or yk019 (from the Deai Website or CD-ROM 1), the teacher adds several examples of seasonal variations in boys' school uniforms.

(4) After reading the bilingual caption of MY-D04, the students check my046-048 (from the Deai Website or CD-ROM 1) to learn about the seasonal variations of Mizushima Yu's school uniform. For ルーズソックス, check out the following Web pages.

Focus on uniforms at work (using the photo of OK-P01), have the students list work places with uniforms in their culture and think about why they wear uniforms at work.
