The teacher asks the students if their school has a uniform. How about at other neighbouring schools? Which is the majority, schools with or without uniforms?

Returning to the Deai photos on the whiteboard, the teacher lets the students guess which is the majority in Japan, schools with uniforms or without uniforms?

Explaining that most high schools in Japan have school uniforms, the teacher introduces various types of school uniforms. If students' image of school uniforms is strongly associated with private schools, the teacher points out that the majority of public high schools also have school uniforms in Japan. The following Web sites will help with this explanation.

The teacher may add that, in Japan, a cool (かっこいい) or cute (かわいい) school uniform acts as a selling point to increase a high school's enrollment. Ask the students if the same goes for schools in their own culture.
