Volunteer activities are quite common in Japan today. How about in your country? In this issue, Gaga reports about two volunteer activities she participated in.

1. Questions to help students' comprehension

■Reconstruction volunteer work on Nonoshima Island

a) What is the name of the volunteer activity that Gaga and her school friends participated in?

b) Where did they go to participate in this activity?

c) What is "Miyagi Memorial Day"?

d) Why do you think Gaga and her school friends participated in this activity?

e) What did they actually do? List four things they did.

f) What kind of stories did they hear from the people who were ready to move out of temporary housing?

g) What did Gaga and her school friends feel and think after experiencing this volunteer work?

h) What kind of actions does Gaga believe important to help reconstruct the area?

2. Discussion points

a) What kind of volunteer groups do you have in your local community? Make a list.

b) Have you ever done volunteer work? Tell your class when, where, and what you did.

c) Find out if anyone in your class knows sign language. Ask them why they started, how they are learning, etc. Also, ask them if they can teach you simple greetings.

d) In your country, is there any place that suffered from a major disaster in the last five years? Are there any volunteers working there? What sort of work are they doing? What kind of actions do you think are needed to help reconstruct the area?

e) Discuss what kind of volunteer activities your school community could take part in. Share your ideas. Also discuss how your volunteer activities can help society.


3. Creative activities
a) After reading Gaga's report, what did you think and feel? Did you have any questions? Write a letter to Gaga.

b) Imagine Gaga and one of her friends are talking about her volunteer activity. Create a dialog between Gaga and her friend. (The friend doesn't know much about Gaga's volunteer activity)

Example
A:ががさん、どこに行きましたか。
B:宮城県の野々島に行きました。
A:野々島で何をしましたか。
B:引っ越しのお手伝いや、道の草取り、神社のそうじなどをしました......。

c) If you have done any volunteer work, create a presentation about your experience. Include photos, maps, etc. to make your presentation interesting. Give your presentation in front of the class.
Include the following points
・What was your motivation to do volunteer work?
・When did you do it?
・Where was it?
・What did you do?
・What did you think and feel as a result of the experience?
・What do you think are the positive aspects of volunteering?

f) 仕事が終わった後、地元の人からどんな話を聞きましたか。

g) このボランティア活動を通じて、ががさんは、どんなことを感じ、考えましたか。

h) ががさんは、被災地の復興の為に、どんなことが大切だと言っていますか。

i) 東北大震災について、知っていることをクラスでシェアーしてください。


■とっておきの音楽祭
a) 「とっておきの音楽祭」とは、どんなお祭りですか。

b) 「とっておきの」という言葉に、どんな意味をこめていますか。

c) ががさんたちは、どんなボランティア活動をしましたか。3つ上げてください。

d) 手話通訳の難しさはどんなことですか。誰に助けてもらいましたか。

e) フィナーレの様子を説明してください。

f) ががさんは、このボランティア活動を通じて、どんな感想を持ちましたか。


2.ディスカッションのヒント
a) あなたの町では、どんなボランティアのグループが活動していますか。みんなでリストを作ってください。

b) あなたは、ボランティア活動をしたことがありますか。いつ、どこで、どんなことをしましたか。クラスで発表してください。

c) クラスに手話を習っている人がいますか。もしいれば、なぜ始めたか、どういう方法で習っているか、簡単なあいさつのやりかた、などを聞いてみましょう。

d) あなたの国で、過去5年間に大きな災害が起こった地域がありますか。その地域でボランティア活動をしている人々がいますか。どんなことをしていますか。また、どんな活動が、その地域の復興につながると思いますか。

e) あなたの学校で、どんなボランティア活動ができるでしょうか。アイディアを出し合いましょう。そして、それをすることで、社会のどんな役に立つのか、話し合ってください。


3.表現活動のヒント
a) ががさんの記事を読んで、どう思いましたか。どんな質問が浮かびましたか。感想や質問を、ががさんに書きましょう。

b) ががさんとクラスメートが、ががさんの参加したボランティア活動について、いろいろ話しています。どんなことを話すでしょうか。ががさんと、そのクラスメートの会話を作ってください。
