Even when we were taking pictures of the same subject, Paul and Polly were dynamic, capturing images without any hesitation. Shinji, on the other hand, always shot pictures with a more distanced, cool approach. Our two team members from abroad were commenting on the novelty of shoe lockers and how serious high school kids are in their club activities, noticing and getting excited about things that we as Japanese took for granted. I experienced firsthand our differences in cultural background and individual sensibilities.

It is possible to find things about nature and society through a camera viewfinder that one easily overlooks in daily life, and because of this, I think my world has grown.

I was nervous about the program before it began, partly because I’d been stressed out about other things including my university entrance exams. But I realized there was nothing for me to worry about. I had a really good time and I’m glad to have been a part of it. I was able to look beyond national boundaries to encounter people’s sensibilities and individual differences, and through evaluations of each other’s work, have been able to expand my outlook. These are things I never could have learned in my studies for entrance exams, and has contributed greatly to improving the person I am.
