Tokyo Disneyland
東京ディズニーランド

Operating on a license from the Walt Disney Company in the United States, Japan's Orientaland Company opened Tokyo Disneyland in 1983 in Urayasu, Chiba prefecture. Tokyo Disneyland was the first Disneyland park to open outside of the United States. It attracts about 17 million visitors annually, with a total of over 250 million between its opening and 2001. Every year Orientaland invests 10 billion yen in new attractions, and the number of visitors has continued to rise. One reason for its success is the exceptionally high rate (95%) of repeat visitors. The American leisure magazine Amusement Business reported that in the year 2000, Tokyo Disneyland had 16.5 million visitors, marking its tenth year as the most popular amusement park in the whole world. Shops, a theater complex, and other businesses have been built in the area surrounding Tokyo Disneyland, and the separate theme park Tokyo Disney Sea was added in 2001, forming a resort area of considerable scale.Japan School Excursion reports that Tokyo Disneyland was the top choice for high school trips (see School Trips) in 1997.
