Introduction of wearing verbs and clothing items and accessories
(*This part can be skipped if students have already learned.)
The instructor introduces some clothing items and verbs for each item
using own clothes, pictures from magazine, etc. The instructor asks
students to guess when they use きています,
はいています, しています, かぶっています, and かけています
in English. Then the instructor gives the students a handout (Worksheet
#1) and they write each verb and example items under
the pictures.
Practicing wearing verbs
The instructor shows many picture cards, and students give appropriate
verbs for each item. (Apparel subscription catalogues can be used
for the picture cards.)
Students work with partners. They describe what their partners are
wearing, and the instructor asks some volunteers to state sentences
they practiced.
Describing what people in the Deai photos are wearing
The instructor describes what みずしまゆう
is wearing as an example.
The instructor introduces some additional vocabulary such as せいふく
(school uniform; MY-D12),
ユニフォーム (sports uniform), たいそうふく
(training wear for P.E. class), and ルーズソックス
(loose socks; MY-D04)
and discuss some differences about clothes in the U.S. and Japan in
English.

Students work in groups. They choose some
Deai photos and prepare to describe what people are wearing in the
photos. Students present their descriptions to the class with big
photo sheets. They place the photo sheets on the board with numbers,
and the students who are listening choose the number of the photo
sheet for each statement. The group members who are giving the presentation
repeat the statement for the second time and ask the class which photo
s/he is talking about.

Talking about own family
Students work with partners. They bring their own family pictures
(or drawings) and tell their partners how their family members look
and what they are wearing. The listener draws a picture according
to what the partner says, and they show their pictures at the end
to see how similar or different their pictures are. Everyone does
the both tasks, telling and drawing.

a) Guessing game
The instructor distributes each student a small piece of paper with
a classmate's name on it. Students write 3 sentences to describe
what the person is wearing. The instructor collects the papers and
asks someone to read the sentences. Other students guess who the person
is.
b) Fruit basket game
All students sit in a circle except one person, who will be the
"おに." The おに has to make
a sentence describing what some people are wearing. For example, when
the おに says, "ジーンズをはいています,"
the students who are wearing a pair of jeans have to stand up and
get a different seat. The おに joins
the action and finds his/her seat. Then the person who could not find
a seat will be the next おに.
