Overview:
Students talk about some occasions that require specific costumes. Using the relevant Deai photos, students examine the status of the kimono in modern Japanese life and compare Japanese clothing conventions to their own.

Examining the status of the kimono in modern Japanese life
The teacher introduces the kimono. Students observe the Deai photos and come to understand that a kimono is not an everyday outfit in Japan now. Activity 1
Comparing clothes for special occasions in Canada and Japan
Students discuss formal occasions in their own culture and what sort of costume they wear for such occasions. They then compare special occasions or festivities in their own culture and in Japan where the costume plays a significant role. Activity 2 Worksheet
