Class membership
クラス編成
くらすへんせい

The personality and aptitude of each student is taken into consideration when deciding the membership of each homeroom class in a school. In senior high schools, students may also be assigned to particular classes on the basis of their scholastic performance or in accordance with the type of curricular program they are following, such as those focusing on humanities or sciences. How often the membership of classes change depends on the school. Some schools reshuffle classes every year, while others may retain the same groupings of students for the entire three years. Classes are frequently identified as ichi-kumi, ni-kumi or A-gumi, B-gumi, etc.
