Temple of the Golden Pavilion. Popular name of Rokuonji, a temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Built on the outskirts of Kyoto by the third Muromachi shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397. The Kinkaku is a gilded three-story pavilion in the garden.
