Note: Clothes in the contest should be gathered or made out of paper, not purchased.

Divide the class into groups.

Select the theme for the fashion show in class. It should be something unusual, wacky/quirky and humorous, such as "Fashion for a date," "The coolest fashion," "The worst fashion," "Fashion for a season," "New styles for graduation," "New styles for Halloween," etc.
In each group, every student assumes one of the following roles:

1) Model(s)
2) Director
3) Designer/Stylist
4) Commentator

*The Director or Designer/Stylist will undertake the role of cameraperson for the videotaping.

Choose dates for the videotaping and presentation.

Discussing the show:
Discuss in groups what sort of outfits should be presented. The Designer/Stylist leads the discussion. The group should also decide on outfits for the commentators.

Practice, videotape the performance, and edit the tape.

Invite the judges and hold the contest. The students may also participate in voting for a prize from the floor or write a comment for each outfit presented.

Acknowledgement:
The idea of not just holding a contest, but weaving technology into the lesson using video clips was originally introduced by Yo Azama sensei at ACTFL 2002 in Salt Lake City, with the following two suggestions:

- With the cooperation of computer support staff, we can weave computer technology into Japanese language learning. Have the students videotape the performance and edit it.
(Possible application to National Standard [Connection: Standards 3.1.])

- Invite judges from outside of the class to involve the community in Japanese language learning at your school. (The principal, other subject teachers, parents, and people with background in the Japanese language would be good judges.)
