Message from the photographer

She’s a quiet, reserved girl attending confectionery school. She’s got boyish looks, and is like both a female friend and a male friend to me. Her hobby is “cosplay” (dressing in costumes). At times she’ll dress up exactly like a two-dimensional character from anime or manga, and other times she’ll dress up in a way that would make you mistake her for a boy. In those instances, she becomes a completely different person from the unfussy girl she usually is. Her expression, so alive at such times, surprises me every time, and also gives me glimpses into her internal complexity and ambiguity. That, I think, is what’s appealing about her.

About the subject

I thought that my friend, who is like a girl but is also like a guy, would be an interesting person to photograph, and chose her as my subject.
