The capital of Okinawa prefecture located on the southwestern side
of the main island of Okinawa facing the East China Sea. Flourished
from the days of the Ryukyu kingdom as the trading port of the capital
at Shuri. When Okinawa prefecture was established in 1879, it became
the seat of the prefectural government. It is the political, economic,
cultural, and transportation center of Okinawa. Pop.: approx. 304,000
(2001). |
