Chiba prefecture lies on the eastern side of Tokyo. Its population is mainly concentrated in the northwestern part, which has become a residential and industrial satellite of the Tokyo-Yokohama urban belt. Farms in Chiba market produce in the city and fishing is a flourishing industry in Tokyo Bay and along the Pacific Coast. Pop.: approx. 5,961,000 (2001).
