Let's Compare Words Expressing Sounds

Important Expressions

Preparation
Select photographs from the TJF Photo Data Bank that show something that can be expressed using onomatopoeia.

Collect recordings of the sounds made by the actions pictured in the selected photographs on an MD or cassette tape. You may wish to arrange to play the sounds directly from a PC in the classroom. (Sounds for the above photographs may be heard at the Takarabako website.)


Procedure
1. The teacher should lightly snap his/her fingers, and ask, "これは、英語(えいご)で何(なん)ですか" (How would you describe this sound in English?). (Expected response is "snap.")

2. Then, saying "では、日本(にほん)の写真(しゃしん)を見(み)ましょう," show the students one photograph and have them freely describe what they see in it (and, depending on their competence, also describe what they do not see).
Example: 99118e (Tennis): "高校生(こうこうせい)です," "テニスをしています," "テニスはおもしろいです." ("This is a high school student." "He/She is playing tennis." "Tennis is fun.")

3. After most of the studentsユ responses have come, play the recording of a tennis ball being batted back and forth, saying "では、テニスの音(おと)を聞(き)きましょう." Then ask "これは、英語(えいご)で何(なん)ですか," and have the students freely describe it. Finally the teacher should explain, "これは日本語(にほんご)では 'ぱこーん' といいます."

4. Divide the students into small groups, distribute 1 photograph to each group, and have them think about how the sound being made in the photo is expressed in English.

5. Each group tells how the sound is expressed in English, showing the photograph to the class. Then the teacher plays the recording of the sound for each scene. (The order is important. It is a good idea to divide the tracks for each sound on the MD.)

6. When all the presentations are finished, line up all the photographs in front of the students. Write the Japanese onomatopoeia on the black/white board in random order and then have the students try to match the photographs with the words. The group that makes the most correct matches wins.

7. One possible way to wrap up the activity is to have all the students make sentences following the "Verb 1 (plain form) するときの音(おと)は〜です" pattern.
