There are a wide variety of periodicals in Japan, monthly, weekly, seasonal, and bi-monthly, but the largest number are monthly or weekly magazines. It is estimated that 3.4 billion magazines were sold in Japan in the year 2000. Of this number, 2.1 billion were monthly magazines and 1.3 billion were weeklies. Japanese high school students enjoy different kinds of magazines clearly difined by gender. Boys read comics, computer-game, and specialty magazines, while girls prefer fashion and specialty magazines.
