System of recommendation for university entrance
推薦入学制度
すいせんにゅうがくせいど

Universities admit a certain proportion of new students screened on the basis of recommendations from high school principals, report cards, interviews, short essays, and other criteria.

One purpose of the system is to ensure a more diversified student body. Also referred to as ichigei nyushi (one-skill entrance), more universities today are accepting students who have excelled in a club activity, have some unique talent, such as being the national kendama (cup and ball game) champion, or are TV celebrities recommended under this system.
