The oshiire is a closetfor futon sleeping quilts and is usually a built-in fixture of a tatami room. It is about one tatami mat in size and usually divided by a shelf in the middle. With the westernization of the contemporary Japanese home and the increasing use of beds, the function of the oshiire has become more diversified. Small chests of drawers may take the place of futon, poles may be installed to hang clothes, and a variety of items ranging from irons to tables may be stored there.
