Water is plentiful in Japan and tap water is generally drinkable. When you go to a restaurant, water is served without charge in restaurants. Recently, however, sales of bottled water have been increasing as people's tastes become more demanding. Tea is consumed in all varieties, Western (black or pekoe tea), Chinese (oolong and jasmine), and Japanese (green tea, mugi-cha [barley tea], etc.) as is coffee, hot chocolate, milk, and a wide variety of sports drinks. Drinks are sold in box packages, in canned, bottled, and PET bottle form. Some drinks are sold in powder form.
