City in southern Kyoto prefecture. The capital of Japan in ancient times and home of the Imperial court from 794 to 1868, Kyoto is rich in historical sites and relics and today one of Japan's largest cities. The city is known for fine textiles and traditional arts and crafts and is also a thriving center for industry. Pop.: approx. 1,468,000 (2001).
