From 794 A.D. Kyoto was the political and cultural hub of the country. The southeastern part of the prefecture, where it joins the megalopolis stretching from Kyoto through Osaka and Kobe, is industrially developed and suffers from overpopulation, while the northern part, quite the opposite, is gradually decreasing in population. Pop.: approx. 2,645,000 (2001).
