Daimonjiyama
大文字山
だいもんじやま

Mountainside where fires are lit tracing the strokes of the character 大 (dai, meaning great). Similar fires are lit on the slopes of four other mountains around Kyoto on the final evening of the three days of Bon to bid farewell to the souls of the deceased who are believed to revisit family homes for the festival. The shapes outlined in flame on the other hills include a boat and the characters 妙(myo) and 法(ho) (which together mean "mystic law").
