According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 111,491 students, equivalent to 2.6% of the total, dropped out of senior high school in 1997. This was the highest recorded figure since the survey first began in 1982. The most common reason given for quitting school was "change of future plans" (40.8%) followed by "inability to adapt to school life and study" (33.4%).
