The photographers were usually a friend, teacher, or other person with a close relationship to the Deai student who had experience in photography. When such a person was not available, university students majoring in photography and close in age to the subjects were commissioned by TJF to take the photographs. TJF adopted this approach on purpose. It knew that obtaining photographs of the students in their natural environment meant getting photographers who not only had solid technical skills, but who could readily relate to and understand the students. Many of the photographers were past entrants in the “Daily Lives of Japanese High School Students Photo-Message Contest” mentioned in question one (Q1).
