Valentine’s Day

On Valentine’s Day (February 14) in Japan it is customary for girls to give presents of chocolates to boys, especially boys they particularly like or people who have been helpful to them. This custom began in the 1950s and became well established in the 1970s. Among students the recent trend is to exchange presents of chocolates with friends regardless of gender and this is known as “friend chocolates” (tomo choko).
